Workshop 3

Workshop 3: Peer Teaching and Student-Teacher Partnership Initiatives in Medical Education

Workshop Abstract

Engaging students as teachers and partners in the teaching and learning (T&L) of medicine is transformative towards cultivating holistic healthcare practitioners. The facilitators will highlight the need and relevance for peer teaching and student-teacher partnership in T&L. Case-based scenarios will explore how the facilitators have addressed challenges in teaching and learning through collaboration with students and the diverse dynamics of these partnerships.

Participants will then engage in a guided and collaborative experience to design peer teaching and student-teacher partnership programs using evidence-based frameworks. This co-creation process will be directly applicable to participants’ current practices and future development.

The following will be covered:

  • Element analyses to guide reflection on the dynamics, drivers and barriers of peer teaching and student-teacher partnership; and
  • Design thinking model to guide the peer teaching and student-teacher partnership process

At the end of the workshop, participants will outline and strategize practical approaches for implementing peer teaching and student-teacher partnerships – identifying opportunities, challenges, actionable steps, and create personalized plans that support the development of healthcare practitioners.
